ABOUT WOOLIGALOOLI

How it all began.

Crochet to me meant beautiful colors and intricate designs.  My husband commented that I should use natural yarns and not technical (acrylics) yarns.  I started doing research on natural yarns and soon I was interested in processing and spinning natural fibers.

I purchased a second hand traditional spinning wheel. Starting with raw cotton was obvious to me as cotton is grown in the area, but it turned out to be quite a challenge.  I then started spinning merino (super wash and non-super wash), bamboo and silk roving and loved the feel of handspun yarn.  Each fiber has different properties, e.g., staple length, thickness in microns, weight.

I also wanted to work with raw fleece. Acquiring raw Alpaca fleece from local South African Alpaca breeders, I processed, spun and knitted with it.  Alpaca has a range of 12 different natural colors. From pure white to fawns to browns to black.

Then the dye bug got hold of me. The creative outlet it provides, is indescribable. There is no right or wrong, only interesting effects. Being an Indi dyer is thrilling.  As I am also an artist, I love playing with color.

This is how it all began and Wooligalooli was born.  I want to share the wonderful feel of natural yarn and beautiful hand dyed colors with the world.
